About Sigma Theta
Sigma Theta is led by Dr Miles Sowden, an atmospheric and environmental scientist with more than forty years of experience across South Africa, Australia and the United States. The company has operated since 2015, providing dispersion modelling, environmental assessment and technical scientific analysis for government, industry and research groups.
Core consulting work
The primary work is dispersion modelling and interpretation of air-quality impacts. This includes regulatory assessments, source characterisation, scenario evaluation, model validation and integration of observational evidence. All work is based on clear physics, transparent workflows and reproducible methods suitable for regulatory and legal contexts.
Research and technical capability
A key point of difference is the ability to extend beyond standard model operation. Research activities involve quantitative use of Himawari-8/9 radiance and temperature fields to identify atmospheric structure, rapid-change plume behaviour and situations where model outputs alone are insufficient. This includes ΔFusion methods, high-resolution reconstruction, statistical analysis and advanced data processing.
Miles maintains an ORCID-verified research record, contributes as a peer reviewer for international journals in atmospheric science and remote sensing, and holds an adjunct association with Curtin University.
Approach
The approach emphasises clarity, traceability and reproducibility. Analytical steps are documented, assumptions are explicit and results can be independently replicated.
Regional focus
Work is centred on the Himawari-8/9 observational domain covering Australia, Southeast Asia and the wider Asia-Pacific region. This region experiences frequent smoke and dust events and requires satellite-supported interpretation due to heterogeneous monitoring coverage.
